Oral Cancer Screening

The oral cavity includes your lips, cheek lining, gums, the front part of your tongue, floor of the mouth beneath the tongue and the hard palate that makes up the roof of your mouth. Research has identified a number of factors that increase the risk of developing cancer in these tissues. When you visit Dr. Edison Han, DDS, FAGD, he may suggest oral cancer screening to identify mouth cancer early, when there is a greater chance for a cure.

Oral cancer screening is an examination performed by Dr. Edison Han, DDS, FAGD right here in the office. This procedure is done during a routine dental visit to look for signs of cancer or precancerous conditions in the mouth. Symptoms of oral cancer include a sore or irritation that doesn’t go away, red or white patches on tissues in the oral cavity, as well as difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking. It’s important to understand that just because your dentist may recommend an oral cancer screening; it doesn’t necessarily mean you have cancer.
